「NSFW」「CW」「TW」これらはインターネットで頻繁に使われる略語ですが、その意味はご存知でしょうか。
今回の記事では、英語のインターネット略語についてお話します。

頭字語を目にして、初めてこのような略語があることを知りました。
携帯電話でテキストメッセージをやり取りできる技術が発展するにつれ、
言語も変化し、よりたくさんの略語や絵文字が使われるようになりました。
元々、‘shorthand’という言葉は、話し手のスピードについていくために
言葉を速く書き留める方法のことを意味していました。
この方法は、法廷における速記者、取材を行う記者、
大学の講義を受ける学生などに使われていました。
私がいた高校では、Shorthandは選択授業として教えられていました。
インターネットで使われている略記の頭文字は今や数が多すぎて、
英語ネイティブであっても意味を調べなければいけないこともあります。

SNSなどで目にした略語の意味が分からずに調べた経験はありますが、まだまだ知らない略語はたくさんあります。全てを把握することは難しいですが、今回の記事に登場した「NSFW」「CW」「TW」などは覚えておくと役に立ちそうですね。覚えた略語は、英語のメッセージのやり取りやSNSの発信などで実際に使う機会があると身に付きやすいかもしれません。

tldr: Shorthand is a curious and important development of language via the Internet.
I first started using the Internet when I was a university student in the 1990s. Since then I have seen the English language change significantly to adapt to this new method of interaction. People now commonly use shorthand to communicate longer thoughts that would normally take more time to type out. I first observed this in the Internet chat rooms in the late 90s with acronyms like ‘rofl’ (rolling on the floor laughing). As cell phone texting technology developed, language also changed to adopt even more acronyms and then ‘emojis’.
The term ‘shorthand’ was originally used to denote a quick method of writing language to keep up with what a speaker was saying. This method was used by stenographers in courtrooms, by reporters doing interviews, and by students during university lectures. Shorthand was even taught in an elective class in my high school.
Acronyms for shorthand used on the Internet are now so numerous that even native speakers of English have to sometimes lookup what they mean. There are websites that list some of the more commonly used shorthand phrases, such as this one. Reddit is a major website devoted to curating discussions over a vast array of topics. I participate on Reddit occasionally, and I encounter many shorthand phrases that I have to sit and think about for a minute or so to figure out what the commenter is saying.
Learning this shorthand is important to not only communicate effectively in English on the Internet, but can also help non-native speakers of English avoid some potentially embarrassing situations. One very important abbreviation to learn is NSFW—this stands for ‘Not Safe For Work.’ It is typically used as a warning positioned next to a hyperlink that contains disturbing or sexual content that one would not want to open up on their browser if they are at their desk at work! There are other ways of saying this as well, such as CW (Content Warning) and TW (Trigger Warning).
Non-native English speakers navigating the Internet must familiarize themselves with English Internet shorthand to really connect with different communities on the Web. There’s a lot of information in the English language on the Internet, and not knowing this shorthand will deprive one of the richness of what our Internet age has to offer.
