イギリス在住の英文校閲者が築250年にもなるという
マイホームについて話を聞かせてくれました。
田舎でのんびりと暮らし、古い家に住むことが長年の夢だったという校閲者。
日本とイギリスの住宅事情の違いも分かり、興味深い内容です。

私が小さい頃、バージニア・リー・バートンの
『ちいさいおうち』という絵本をもらいました。
この絵本は、田舎に建てられた家が、高いビル、夜のぎらぎらとした光、
騒音、煙たい空気など、拡大する都市に徐々に飲み込まれていく話です。
子供だった私が戸惑ったのは、物語の最後で家が持ち上げられ、
トラックに積まれて田舎の新しい場所に移されることでした。
私が育ったイギリスでは、この物語の舞台である
アメリカにあるような木造の家ではなく、レンガや石造りの家が多いので、
家を持ち上げて移動するようなことはあり得ないのです。
当時はこれが有名な児童書だとは知らず、
20代になってその本を書店で見つけたときはとても驚き、感動しました。
見慣れたページをめくっていくと涙が溢れてきました。
幼い頃から農場で暮らしたいと考えていた私にとって、
「ちいさいおうち」は、長い間にわたって強い影響を与えてきたのだと思います。
長時間働き、安い借家に住み、10年以上貯金をしてきた36歳のとき、
私はついに夢を実現することができました。
私は家と、羊と牛を放牧するための9ヘクタールの土地を買いました。
大都会で優雅なマンションに住んだり、新築の家に引っ越したり、
国によって人々の「夢」は様々ですが、
イギリス人の「夢」は、田舎でのんびりと暮らすことで、
絵に描いたような古い家に住むことが理想です。
私の家は1782年に建てられたもので、石のブロックでできており、
壁の厚さは60センチもあるので、それを持ち上げて
移動するということはどう考えても不可能なのです。
最も近い大都市までは100キロ離れているので、
しばらくはスプロール現象の心配をする必要はありません。
石造りの家に住むことにはメリットとデメリットがあります。
欠点としては、断熱性が悪く、家を暖かく保つのにお金がかかることです。
だから、今日のように冬になると、私は書斎と台所だけを暖め、
暖かい服を着ます。暖めていない部屋の室温は7 ˚Cという寒さです。
暖かいリビングを楽しみたければ、薪ストーブで薪を燃やします。
その一方で、ここは人里離れた場所で土地が安いので、
夏は涼しく、とてもゆったりとしています。
たまに肌寒くても、私はここでの暮らしが好きです。
私の3人の子供たちも、今は大きくなって都市部で暮らしていますが、
家の周りの森や野原で過ごした子供時代が
いかに楽しかったか、よく話してくれます。

An Old House
When I was a small child, I was given a picture book called ‘The Little House,’ by Virginia Lee Burton. It’s the story of a house that was built in the countryside but was slowly engulfed by the expanding city, with its tall buildings, glaring lights at night, noise, and smoky air. What puzzled me as a child was that at the end of the story, the house is lifted up and loaded onto a truck to be moved to a new place in the countryside. This would be impossible in England, where I grew up, as the houses are made of brick and stone, not of wood, like in America, where the story is set. I didn’t know at the time that this was a famous children’s book, and I was very surprised and moved to find it in a bookshop in my twenties. Tears came to my eyes as I turned the familiar pages. I think ‘The Little House’ must have had a strong and lasting influence, as my plan from an early age was to live on a farm. At the age of 36, having worked long hours, lived in a cheap rented house, and saved for more than a decade, I was finally able to realize my dream. I bought a house and nine hectares of land for grazing sheep and cattle. The people of different countries have different ‘dreams,’ from having an elegant apartment in a big city to moving into a freshly-built house; but the English ‘dream’ is to live an unhurried life in the countryside, ideally in a picturesque old house. My house was built in 1782, and picking it up and moving it is out of the question, as it is constructed of stone blocks, and its walls are 60 centimeters thick. The nearest big city is 100 km away, so I’m safe for a while from urban sprawl. There are advantages and disadvantages to living in a stone house. One drawback is that they are badly insulated and expensive to keep warm, so in the winter, like today, I heat only my office and the kitchen, and wear warm clothes: the unheated rooms are at 7 ˚C. If I want to enjoy a warm living room, I burn logs in the woodstove. On the other hand, it is cool in summer and is very spacious, as this is a remote area and land is cheap. I like living here, even if it is occasionally chilly, and our three children, now grown up and living in towns and cities, often tell me how much they enjoyed their childhood in the woods and fields around our house.
