Thanksgiving in Canada
This past Monday, October 12, was Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Thanksgiving occurs earlier in Canada than it does in the US. In the US, Thanksgiving Day falls on the fourth Thursday of November, while in Canada, it falls on the second Monday of October. The tradition of Thanksgiving was officially proclaimed by the Governor General of Canada, Vincent Massey, in 1957; however, it has a much longer history than this.
Historians believe that Martin Frobisher, an English explorer celebrated the first Thanksgiving in 1578, during his voyage from England to find the Northwest Passage to reach Asia. This was held several decades earlier than the famous first American Thanksgiving held by the pilgrims in 1621. Celebrations to give thanks were often held by European explorers arriving in North America, since their journeys and their process of colonizing the continent was often fraught with difficulties. However, Indigenous people in North America also held communal feasts to celebrate the harvest of crops in the fall. The indigenous crops influenced the choices of food that Canadians have today for not only Thanksgiving, but also for other general meals. Those crops include maize (corn), squash and pumpkin. Turkey is also a bird native to North America that had been domesticated by the indigenous peoples there, and is commonly eaten on Thanksgiving.
