ウィンタールード、フランス語名「雪の舞踏会」は、
カナダの首都圏、オタワとガティノーで
毎年2月に3週間にわたって開催される冬のお祭りです。
1979年に連邦首都委員会によって創設されたこのお祭りは、
カナダの冬の独自の文化や芸術を祝うものです。
毎年平均60万人もの人がここを訪れて楽しみます。
会場には、様々なアクティビティを提供する数多くのエリアがあります。
見て楽しむアクティビティには、雪や氷の彫刻、雪の劇場などがあり、
遊ぶアクティビティには、アイススケート、そり滑り、雪滑り、
さらに「スノーフレークキングダム」という雪と氷の遊園地があります。
ウィンタールードを訪れる人は、伝統的なシュガーシャック
（砂糖小屋、メープルシロップを作る小屋のこと）を再現したお店で
メープルシロップを氷の上で固めたキャンディを味わうこともできます。
また、ファーマーズ・ウィンター・マーケット
（地元の農家や職人が作ったものを売っている）や
地元ビールメーカーの季節限定ビールを味わえる
ウィンター・ブルーフェストなどもあります。
残念なことに、今年のウィンタールードは、
COVID-19のために人と人が接するイベントはすべて中止されてしまい、
カナダの音楽家たちによるショーや演奏もバーチャルで開催されています。
ウィンタールードは2月5日に始まり、2月20日に終了します。

凍った運河がそのままスケートリンクになるとはすごいですね。調べたところ、その長さは7.8kmで世界最長のスケート場としてギネスに登録されているそうです！雪国ならではの冬の楽しみ方ですね。

Winterlude
Winterlude, of Bal de neige in French, is a winter festival held for three weeks every February in the Capital region—Ottawa-Gatineu—of Canada. It was created in 1979 by the National Capital Commission and is a celebration of the unique culture and art of Canadian winters. An average of 600,000 people visit and play there each year.
There are many different areas providing an assortment of activities. The viewing activities include snow sculptures, ice carving displays and snow theatre. The play activities include ice skating, sledding and snow slides. There is also an ice carving display called the Snowflake Kingdom. Visitors can also enjoy tasty treats at the recreated traditional sugar shack, which offers frozen maple syrup. There’s also a Farmer’s Winter Market and a Winter Brewfest with seasonal, local microbrewery beer.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, this year’s Winterlude has cancelled all in-person events, and shows and performances by Canadian music artists are also being given virtually. Winterlude starts today (February 5th) and ends on February 20th. You can watch the opening of Winterlude and many of the performances of traditional Canadian music and arts at the link below.
