北の果ての生活

イギリス在住の英語ネイティブの校閲者によるコラムが新たにスタートしました！
今回は校閲者が住むウェールズ地方での生活についてご紹介します。

私は英国西部のウェールズに住んでいます。
私の家は北緯52度にあり、サハリンやイルクーツク、
ウィニペグと同じ緯度に位置しています。
そのように聞くと、一年中凍えているように思われるかもしれませんが、
実際は穏やかな気候で、霜が降りることはほとんどなく、
夏の最高気温は30℃です。これは、イギリス諸島の西を通過する
メキシコ湾流のおかげで、温暖に気候に保たれているためです。
しかし、私たちが北の果てにいるということを強く実感させられるのは、
日照時間が極端に変化するということです。
現在11月下旬で、冬至まで1ヶ月を切っていますが、
日没は16時15分と既にとても早く、日の出は午前8時と遅いです。
2023年で最も日が短い日は昼が7時間44分しかなく、
夜明けは午前8時27分、日没は16時11分です。
冬のあいだの太陽は、しぶしぶと昇り、
ほんの少しの間だけ地平線に沿って弱々しく移動し、
やがて地平線の下に沈んでいくように見えます。
それでも、長い夜を楽しむために人付き合いが社交的になり、
良い季節であるとも言えます。
パブは満員で、人々は互いの家を訪ねてディナーパーティーを開き、
もちろんクリスマスというイベントもあります。
この辺りはとても田舎なので、ほとんどの人が薪ストーブで家を暖めていますが、
それも非常に心地良い雰囲気を醸し出します。
私自身も薪ストーブを持っていて、寒いなか、2年後に使う薪を切ったり
割ったりして体を温め、楽しい時間を過ごしています。
そして、ここの夏は素晴らしいものです。
最も日が長い日は午前3時から無駄に明るくなり始め、日没は21時45分、
黄昏時が長いおかげで22時30分になっても外で読書をすることができます。
5月から8月までのあいだは、夕食後にビーチに行ったり、テニスをしたり、
庭でビールを飲んだりする時間がたっぷりとあります。
日が短い冬日々は、夏の長く明るい夕方に値します。

Living in the far North
I live in Wales, in the western part of the UK. My house is at 52˚ North, the same latitude as Sakhalin, Irkutsk, and Winnipeg. You might think that we freeze all year, but we actually have a mild climate, with few frosts, and a maximum temperature of 30 ˚C in summer. This is thanks to the Gulf Stream, which passes to the west of the British Isles and keeps it warm. A strong reminder that we are very far North, though, is the extreme changes in day length. We are now in late November, with less than a month to go before the winter solstice, and sunset is already very early, at 4:15 pm, and sunrise is late, at 8:00 am. On the shortest day of 2023, which will last only 7 hours and 44 minutes, dawn is at 8:27 and sunset is at 16:11. In the winter, the sun seems to rise unwillingly, travel weakly along the horizon for a short while, and then sink below it. It is still a nice time of year: the long evenings make it very sociable. The pubs are full, and people visit each other’s houses for dinner parties and, of course, there is Christmas. Because this is a very rural area, most people heat their houses with woodburning stoves, which create a very cosy atmosphere. I have one, too, and spend many enjoyable hours in the colder weather, warming myself by sawing and splitting firewood for use two years later. The summers here are glorious. Although it starts getting light rather uselessly at 3am on the longest day, the sun sets at 9:45pm, and the long twilight means that you can still read outside at 10:30. From May to August, there is plenty of time after supper to go to the beach, or play tennis, or sit in the garden with a refreshing glass of beer. The short winter days are well worth the long, bright evenings in summer.
